Summary

The adventure is over but life goes on for an elf mage just beginning to learn what living is all about。

Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land。 With the great struggle over, they all go their separate ways to live a quiet life。 But as an elf, Frieren, nearly immortal, will long outlive the rest of her former party。 How will she come to terms with the mortality of her friends? How can she find fulfillment in her own life, and can she learn to understand what life means to the humans around her? Frieren begins a new journey to find the answer。

Frieren, Himmel, Heiter and Eisen celebrate their victory by watching the Era meteor shower, an event which occurs every 50 years。 After casually promising to meet them when it happens again, Frieren leaves to study magic。 The years go by and the day comes when Frieren must attend the funeral of one of her comrades, confronting her with her own near immortality。 When she realizes she barely knew the man she fought beside for ten years, she sets out to learn more about people, and carry out the last wishes of her friend--to decipher the secret magic of immortality。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Thanks to Viz media and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy of this manga。This is a wonderful story filled with a deep set melancholic nostalgia, taking place in a world where the Demon Lord has been defeated by the Heroes party, in fact the story starts just after that point。 The title character is a near-immortal Elf who appears to be unaffected by the passage of time and regularly seems not to notice the effect time has on others around her。 It’s not until the deaths of the human members o Thanks to Viz media and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy of this manga。This is a wonderful story filled with a deep set melancholic nostalgia, taking place in a world where the Demon Lord has been defeated by the Heroes party, in fact the story starts just after that point。 The title character is a near-immortal Elf who appears to be unaffected by the passage of time and regularly seems not to notice the effect time has on others around her。 It’s not until the deaths of the human members of the heroes party (both due to old age rather than the usual Swords & Sorcery ends that many such characters usually receive)。 The story is very much a road trip style tale, but a very whimsical journey with no goal in mind, much like you’d expect how a near-immortal would live。 The Hero and his words play quite heavily with Frieren and how they begin to affect her outlook on the world around her, with each chapter counting the passage of time since his passing, I can’t help but think that this will play into the story going forward in future volumes。 The character development is nicely paced too, Frieren appears to develop at a glacial pace (as her life is that much longer than others) but she seems to be changing a bit quicker the more she interacts with others。 This is helped by the introduction of an apprentice that she takes on at the request of the Priest of her former party, who at 5he start of the story is a child being trained by Frieren, and by the end of the volume is a staunch companion and something of a caregiver for the whimsical lead。The story itself is a slow burner that moves at no particular speed, sometimes jumping years or decades between chapters with the characters spending months on tasks during their journey。 I am looking forward to seeing how this series progresses in future volumes, it has in itself the makings of a future favourite。 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review。 All opinions are my own。Picture this: you are an elven, mage adventurer who has just finished an epic 10 year hero's quest with a group of 3 other adventurers。 What do you do now, especially since your lifespan will outlast most others? I enjoyed this manga。 I think its best feature is the subtle and layered feelings of Freiran towards Himmel。 Because my most read genre is epic fantasy, elves' long life has been a commonly explored theme within the genre。 This is why I am giving this manga three stars。 I don't think it's unique or phenomenal, but the warmth of emotion still comes through。Freiran is seemingly emotionless, and the story is her journey to know more about Himmel- a human comrade who has passed away and has been onl I enjoyed this manga。 I think its best feature is the subtle and layered feelings of Freiran towards Himmel。 Because my most read genre is epic fantasy, elves' long life has been a commonly explored theme within the genre。 This is why I am giving this manga three stars。 I don't think it's unique or phenomenal, but the warmth of emotion still comes through。Freiran is seemingly emotionless, and the story is her journey to know more about Himmel- a human comrade who has passed away and has been only 1/100th of her life。 At Himmel's funeral, Freiran mourns not his loss but her not knowing him enough。 I think that feeling carries through the chapters。 。。。more

Sousou No Frieren is a fascinating concept that leaves a great first impression。 It assumes the reader is all too familiar with the stock concepts it presents and wants to explore the consequences of those tropes。 But it doesn't assume a negative or pretentiously grim conclusion when exploring these themes; in fact, it actually glorifies the stock tropes of RPG adventure。 There's never any doubt that the main party were righteous, heroic people despite whatever personality flaws they have had。 T Sousou No Frieren is a fascinating concept that leaves a great first impression。 It assumes the reader is all too familiar with the stock concepts it presents and wants to explore the consequences of those tropes。 But it doesn't assume a negative or pretentiously grim conclusion when exploring these themes; in fact, it actually glorifies the stock tropes of RPG adventure。 There's never any doubt that the main party were righteous, heroic people despite whatever personality flaws they have had。 The heroes journey was also successful and we see that it ultimately benefitted mankind。 But these things are what makes Frieren's emotional baggage so engaging。 That the people and cause that she was attached to are valuable, yet ephemeral。 There are many stories with a heroes journey formula that people often grow attachment to the heroes during the journey itself, but never is the question asked what comes of the "happily ever after?" This story assumes the happily ever after does happen, but like life itself, a happy existence can only last for so long。Characterization beyond Frieren is basic but functional in establishing Frieren's personal conflict of how shallow her interpersonal relationship was with her companions。 The supporting cast is utilized mainly in surface of elevating Frieren's character, and in that sense it's successful。 There's a strong sense of nostalgia and hindsight wherein Frieren contemplates what exactly she gained in her journey with the other heroes。 She admits to herself that she didn't know her companions as well as she liked to, but despite this journey being such a brief experience in her vast existence, it still held significant meaning to her。 She just doesn't know what exactly she valued in her companions, which becomes a major internal conflict for the characters。 This is such an engaging idea, since the assumption made about social relations is that they're valuable but never is it asked what specifically is valuable about these constructs。 This is further elevated by how much of the story focuses on Frieren finding meaning in her immortal lifespan as anything she could possibly have held value in dies or rots before her eyes。 So it begs the question that, even if she does value her old companions, why should she seek further meaning in this? To her, a year is practically a day and there's this utter sense of loneliness that she can never escape regardless of whatever companionship she develops。 To Frieren, becoming overly attached to anyone is counterintuitive。 It's better to strive towards pragmatic altruism and crystallized knowledge than overt moral compassion or hedonism when life around her is so short。The early portions of the story has no real set goal and is more fixated on its themes of the consequences of time and immortality。 Much of the story of this point is about Frieren learning to cope with loss and then reflecting upon what that loss truly meant to her。 The story cleverly conveys this with big time leaps between each chapter, showing just how little Frieren's day to day life changes but how much life does change for her companions, and by extension, her relation and emotional attachment to them。 The flashbacks are generally superficial in terms of character development but they tie together the meaning of each location Frieren travels to in meaningful ways。On a surface level, the world of Frieren is stock fantasy schlock but this is an intentional decision because the story is an exploration of the aftermath of the heroes journey that is all too common in such a setting。 The point of interest in the setting isn't so much its fantasy concepts or inner politics as it is how Frieren and her group had impacted the world on their journey almost a century earlier。 Frieren's attitude towards said world elevates this - she's indifferent to the actual glorification of her legacy, but shows great concern over the remnants of her companions legacy。 This is interesting since we see that she's become attached to the idea of their existence despite having a great deal of uncertainty of what that existence actually was or why she values it。https://i。imgur。com/mv3kV6q。pngThe art is detailed and often eyecatching but the setpieces are generally bland with uninspired design, which is perhaps intentional。 However, the paneling elevates the art substantially。 With the above panel, the passage of time is conveyed eloquently without the need of a textbox, showing us what Frieren had been doing within the last few decades between a chapter。 The paneling is also fantastic in conveying shifting moods and motion within any given scene in gradual steps。 https://external-preview。redd。it/jutI。。。However, where the series starts to taper off is when it all of a sudden decides to be a generic shounen。 We get this stupid arc where Frieren is openly discrimatory and distrustful towards a group of demons who present themselves as altruistic。 Turns out Frieren was in the right for being racist and the plot diverges into cheesy "mana level" monologs that wouldn't be out of place in something like Naruto or Bleach。 It has gone away from the contemplative, introspective narrative that hooked me from the start and seems to be more content in pushing the narrative towards a more action/adventure bent which it's ironically deconstructing。 Perhaps there's supposed irony in this plot beat, but it strikes me as not well-intended。 This arc shows the story is unwilling to challenge Frieren on her beliefs and doesn't assume she maintains any attitudes that could be archaic, which in this case is particularly abhorrent given the implications。 It seems like the story is starting to lose its intrigue about the value of time and relationships。 The story has stopped having major time leaps within each chapter and instead is structured more linear in its timescale of events becoming centralized around the stock foreshadowing of her companions than the legacy of adventure。 Considering the story is, as of yet, unfinished there may be a good payoff to all of this but if it continues this route I feel I may end up disappointed by the end of it all。 。。。more
